2015 SAW Community Day

Breaking News: Mary Cliff, Tom Carrico, Jesse Palidofsky, Ruthie Logsdon, and Jim Clark will be joining Steve Gnadt and Ron Goad on the panel for the “First Impressions” critique. This is an excellent opportunity for your music to get heard.

You are cordially invited to come for the day, or any part of it, to enjoy speed networking, educational workshops, outdoor song circles/music jam, an open mic, performance critiques, showcases, cool door prizes, and lots of opportunities to meet, connect and have fun with other members of our great music community.

Dinner and all activities are FREE for SAW members (Non-members: $10 per workshop; $10 dinner).

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

11:45AM Community Day Welcome, Check-In, Socialize 

Join SAW or renew your SAW membership to participate in free members-only activities. Receive your meal ticket and more. At this time, you may drop off a CD for the “First Impressions" critique, or sign up for the Performance critique.
Noon - Sunset: Song Circles 
Open to all. Indoors & outdoors, under a tent, continuous throughout the day. 

12:45 - 2:00PM “First Impressions” Paticipation by SAW members only. All attendees welcome to watch/listen!)

A panel of music leaders listens to and comments on SAW members’ recorded original songs on CD. Panelists include:
Mary Cliff -- legendary host of Traditions radio show -- MaryCliff.net --leader of The Folklore Society of Greater Washington -- multiple-Wammie winner - Most Supportive of Washington Music.
Tom Carrico -- Talent developer for music acts, former Mary Chapin Carpenter manager, currently manages Chopteeth and others.
Jim Clark -- Concert booker for restonherndonfolkclub.com, award-winning songwriter w/ The Harley String Band.
Jesse Palidofsky -- Carroll Cafe concert producer, award-winning songwriter.
Steve Gnadt -- Vice president of Focus Music -- Host of Concerts at The Historic Coopers House in Oakland Mills.
Ruthie Logsdon -- Thirty WAMMIE awards, six CDS, touring, radio airplay and national television appearances.

*Submitted songs are drawn at random as time allows
*The first minute of the song is played 
*Panelists comment on the song and on the recording
*Songwriters have option to identify themselves or remain anonymous 

2:00 – 3:15PM Speed Networking

Workshop devised by Blake Althen of Human Factor [ http://humanfactor.net ] Meet with music industry leaders from an array of DC-area music organizations, in this interactive and fun activity.

3:30 – 4:45PM        Workshop A  - Mark Sylvester – Expanding your strumming and fingerpicking repertoire.

Composer/multi-instrumentalist Mark Sylvester blends the sounds, styles, and instruments of American folk music with the experimental spirit of contemporary classical and art rock music.   Solo guitarist and singer-songwriter, member of Great Noise Ensemble, and 2009 WAMMIE Award winner. (Bring your guitar)

3:30 – 4:45PM Workshop B - Karl Straub - Putting Melodies Under the Microscope

Accomplished songwriter, performer and music teacher; extensive musical experience including a degree in music education. This workshop will focus on the process of writing and re-writing a melody, one note at a time. Straub's belief is each individual note has a job, and songwriters need to recognize when a note is not pulling its weight.

6:00 pm Dinner (Free for SAW members, $10 for nonmembers)

During dinner: Mid-Atlantic Song Contest Director, Loralyn Coles. officially unveils the 31th Winners’ compilation CD, SAW Leaders introduced, door prizes. 

7:00 – 8:00PM Performance Critique (Participation by SAW members only. All attendees welcome to watch/listen)

Receive a written critique of your performance of an original song. Sign up on arrival 
8:00-10:00 PM Open Mic and Community Day conclusion.
SAW members perform a song or two. All attendees welcome to watch/listen.
Cleanup volunteers needed afterwards - please stay and help if you can
