SAW COMMUNITY DAY
Who: The DC, MD, VA songwriting community, friends and families
What: A celebration of the common bond of songwriting— a day of learning, some organizational business, dinner (did we mention it’s free?), some time to interact and relax with friends old and new, and the chance to play and be played to by some very talented songwriters. Just in case that’s not enough of a reason, you could be the winner of a door prize or a $400 Guitar Center gift card
Must be a current SAW member to enter the drawing or to win door prizes. Membership applications will be available. To inquire about your SAW Membership status, email: membership@saw.org. Current SAW Board Members/Associates are not eligible to win prizes.
Where: The Lab at Convergence - 1819 Crestwood Drive, Alexandria, VA 22302 (located off N. Quaker Lane). Click here for bus directions and a fine Google Map©.
When: Saturday, June 14, 2008, starting at 1:00pm. Come for part of the day, or come for the long haul!
How: Through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers and the generosity of some great sponsors and donors.
Why: Because we like you!
- Workshop (1-4pm) - "Balancing the Art, Craft, & Business of Songwriting," presented by Scott & Jen Smith of Naked Blue. Successful songwriting veterans Jen and Scott Smith of the band Naked Blue will share their experiences as writers in the "industry" to help aspiring songwriters with advice on how to get songs into television, film or in the hands of successful recording artists. Jen and Scott will deconstruct a hit song and define the elements that make it broadly appealing. They will help songwriters apply those concepts of "craft" to their own songs. Participants should bring copies of lyrics and a guitar or recording of a song that they are working on.
Cost: SAW members who preregister before June 12 will receive the special rate of $20 (non-members $30). $30/$40 at the door. Go to www.saw.org to register.
Have you ever wanted to get your songs into Television, Film or in the hands of successful recording Artists? Are you looking for focus on where you'd like your songs to end up and what you can do to get them there? Are you concerned that your work isn't "refined" enough to be appealing or if you should commercialize to appeal to the masses?
In SAW's upcoming workshop, Balancing the Art, Craft & Busines of Songwriting, successful songwriting veterans Jen and Scott Smith of the band Naked Blue will share their experiences as writers in the "industry".
The workshop will begin with a discussion of the joys & conflicts they have experienced while making (and trying to make) money from songs.
Jen and Scott will deconstruct a hit song and define the elements that make it broadly appealing. You will have an opportunity to have them help you to apply some of those concepts of "craft" to your songs. So be sure to bring copies of your lyrics and a guitar or recording of the song you want to work on. They will conclude the workshop with a Q&A time on practical and legal issues affecting songwriters in today's market. If you have ever paid for a consultation with an entertainment lawyer to answer questions about today's legal issues, the financial value of this part of the workshop alone is enormous.
By the end of the session you will have gained some focus on where you'd like your songs to end up and what you can to do to help get them there.
Scott & Jen Smith have written hundreds of songs, released 5 CDs and co-written and/or worked with a few high profile artists including Anton Fig, Ivan Neville, Gary Nicholson, Kenny Rogers, Pete Brown & John & Sally Tiven. They've had songs recorded by MCA recording artists Evangeline, Telarc Records recording artist Troy Turner and have appeared on compilations including The British at Midem, A Taste of AAA, Paste Magazine Sampler 2 and 3, Recording Magazine Playback 18 and 3 Best of Taxi compilations to name a few. Their most recent CD peaked at #105 on FMQB. Scott & Jen have also had the song placements in 14 films & TV shows to date.
