The Mid Atlantic Song
Contest is produced by the Songwriters' Association of Washington
(SAW). The 25th Annual MASC received 900 or so entries from contestants
regionally and from all over the world, who entered their original
songs with the hope of winning the Grand Prize of $1000. Thirty-three
judges listened to close to 1000 songs divided among eleven different
categories. They then sent their category results to the Grand Prize
Panel for top winner decisions. Winners of the contest were
honored on January 11th, and the Grand Prize winner and runners-up
announced.
The Mid-Atlantic Song
Contest recognizes up-and-coming songwriters with prizes ranging
from $1,000 cash to production of a video and CD mastering by Omega
Studios; International Folk Alliance Showcase opportunities, memberships
in TAXI, and the latest-edition Songwriter's Market books. All Gold
and Silver winners from each of the 11 categories are included on
a Winners? CD, compliments of Oasis CD
Manufacturing. Additional sponsors include Stairway East, Mary Cliff
of WAMU radio, and Siobhan Quinn Vocal Instructor.
Founded in 1979, SAW is a non-profit organization
devoted to strengthening and supporting the craft of songwriting
through its sponsorship of workshops, peer critiques and seminars
featuring songwriters, musicians, producers and other music professionals.
SAW also hosts open mic nights and showcases throughout the metropolitan
area and coordinates community service opportunities for local songwriters.
