Ron Goad, Member Showcases Ron has enjoyed judging for SAW for a few years and joined in the past year. Sometimes he is onstage as a singing guitarist, but most often he's the drummer for Nightmusic, a quintet he joined in '84, and he is still the newest member in the band. Since the '70's Ron has cowritten, arranged, performed (usually as a percussionist), and/or recorded with songwriters including Ray Kaminsky, John Jackson, Roger Henderson, Randy Thompson, Ralph Fortune, John Previti, Finnish mandolinist Niles Hokkanen, New England's Karl Shuman, Nashville's Janice Cronin, and most recently with fellow SAW member Paula Monks. Working on original music with her has been the most work and the most fun since the summer of 2001.For many years Ron has connected musicians with venues from DC to Winchester, free of charge; most recently scheduling live music seven days a week at Ben's Whole Hog BBQ. He has enjoyed joining a variety of people onstage from the Johnny Artis Band to Sue Trainor, Angie Miller, Jimmy Cole, The Meteors, Random Act, Bugleweed, Janet Saadian, TM Hanna among many others. A specialty of R on's is filling in on the drums when there is a "drum emergency," such as when a band's regular drummer spontaneously combusts. Since 1973, Ron's "day gig" has been teaching high school English and Creative Writing in Fairfax County, Virginia. A thrust of his has been to show teenagers how songwriting applies skills they learn in his class. Some of the songwriters who have come to perform for or with Ron at his school include Jennifer Ferguson Smith and Scott Smith of Naked Blue, Sue Trainor, Bill Parsons, Roger Henderson, and Steve Key. Ron loves not only performing, but also listening, and have been known to turn down gigs in order to be in someone's audience. |
